HOW TO HOPE LIKE A COHO

By DAVID JAMES DUNCAN

Booze is a liquid famous for ultimately robbing its admirers of everything but booze itself. Rivers are a liquid that does the exact opposite. Untamed rivers have answered my to lifelong addition to them by filling an inordinately large part of my life with wonder, peace, gratitude and joy. That I can’t give you the hard science behind these feelings doesn’t mean it’s woowoo. Hard science deals with the physical. Peace and joy are metaphysical. That I can’t give you the economic value of such feelings doesn’t mean they’re worthless, either. To place economic value on a moment of love or joy or wonder is a pimp’s job, not a river lover’s.
